Work in the Razor's Edge pattern until your leg measures 4 inches (or desired length)

K33 sts, work the last 33 sts even in the Razor's Edge Pattern.
repeat this 3 times.
K33 sts with the scrap yarn, Go back and reknit those 33 sts with the sock yarn.

Afterthought Demo:

Starting to knit with the waste yarn.

All the 33 sts have been knit with the waste yarn

Knitting over the waste yarn with the sock yarn.

The heel is set and we're ready to move on.

Continue working the bottom 33 sts in stst and the top 33 sts in the Razor's edge pattern.

Work in this manner until the sock foot measures 4 inches less than the overall measurement of the foot fo the recipient of your sock. You will be measuring from the line where you placed your scrap yarn (this represents where the heel will go).

TOE:
Round 1: Needle1: Knit within 3 sts of end of needle, K2tog, K1, Needle 2: K1, SSK, Knit within 3 sts of end of needle, K2tog, K1, Needle 3: K1, SSK, Knit to the end.
Round 2: Knit all
Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until you have reduced to 30sts.
Kitchener the toe stitches together and weave in ends.

HEEL:
Pick up the stitches on either side of the scrap yarn. Make sure to have the yarn legs on the correct sides or just be mindful when you start knitting again that you aren't making twisted stitches. - Remove the waste yarn.If you cut the waste yarn, which may seem the easier route, you will end up with a ton of tiny stitches to remove, I didn't do this but I had a friend that did and warned me - so I'm passing on the warning.

You have your 66 sts picked up. Arrange it so you have 66 sts one one needle and 33 on each of the otheres. Mark your beginning in the middle of the 2 33 sts needle., Attach yarn and knit once around, if you need to pick up stitches in the sides to keep from having a hole, don't be afraid to do so.
Round 1: Needle1: Knit within 3 sts of end of needle, K2tog, K1, Needle 2: K1, SSK, Knit within 3 sts of end of needle, K2tog, K1, Needle 3: K1, SSK, Knit to the end.
Round 2 and 3: Knit all
Repeat rounds 1 through 3 - 3 times.
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until you have decreased to 26 sts.
Kitchener the heel. Weave in all ends.

The plus side to this kind of heel is trying on the full sock and making the heel custom. You can change the number of knit to decrease rows in order to suit your foot. Plus it helps keep the pattern in your handpaint or striped yarn intact.

If you don't know by now - make 2 socks for a pair. The rule is that if you cast on the second sock of a pair you won't have Second sock syndrome. I find in most cases this is true. Most of the languishing 10 sock projects are all single socks that didn't have their mate cast on immediately (so they have yet to be cast on at all).
