Alpaca Mitts

Abbreviations:
K= knit, P=Purl, S= Slip, K2tog=Knit 2 sts together, PSSO= Pass slipped stitch over and off needle, YO=yarn over, LHN=Left hand needle, RHN=Right hand needle, CO= cast on, BO = Bind off, Stst=stockinette stitch

I used my own alpaca handspun for this sample but you can use any DK/sportweight yarn. You will need approximately 120 yards.

Yarn: DK/Sport - 120 yds
Needles: US3 DP's or size to obtain gauge.
Gauge: 6sts and 8 rows =1 inch
Contrasting piece of waste yarn in a similar thickness to the main yarn.

Lace Pattern:
R1 and 3: Knit all
R2: *K1, YO, K3, (S1, K2tog, PSSO), K3, YO ----Repeat from * around
R4: *P1, K1, YO, K2, (S1, K2tog, PSSO), K2, YO, K1----Repeat from * around
R5 and 7: P1, K9 around
R6: *P1, K2, YO, K1, (S1, K2tog, PSSO), K1, YO, K2----Repeat from * around
R8: *P1, K3, YO, (S1, K2tog, PSSO), YO, K3----Repeat from * around
These 8 rows are your pattern rows.

CO 40 sts Join in the Round, marking your beginning.
Work 2 rounds of the lace pattern.
Work in stst even until the stockinette portion of your mitt measures 3 inches.
Knit the next 6 stitches with your waste yarn. This will mark your thumb hole.
Transfer these stitches back to your LHN and work over them in stst in your main yarn. Continue the round.
Work in stst until you have added another 2.5 inches.
BO all stitches loosely.

Thumb -
Pick up the six sts under your waste yarn and hold on a needle. Pick up the six sts over your waste yarn and hold on a needle. Remove the waste yarn by picking it out wiht a spare needle.
Attach your yarn. Knit the first 6sts, pick up a stitch in the gusset and knit it. Knit the last 6sts and pick up a st in the gusset and knit it. mark rhe beginning/end of your round.
Work around in stst until your thumb measures 1 inch.
BO all stitches loosely

Make 2 of the mitts.
Weave in all ends and Block.

Voila - they are that simple.
